{"id":1143,"date":"2022-11-14T18:54:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T18:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.christopherreeve.org\/community\/about-us\/dana-reeve\/"},"modified":"2025-06-12T15:35:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T19:35:37","slug":"dana-reeve","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.christopherreeve.org\/todays-care\/paralysis-help-overview\/dana-reeve\/","title":{"rendered":"About Dana Reeve"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\" bg--light-grey\">\n    <div class=\"o-container \">\n\n<div class=\"article\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"display: block; margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christopherreeve.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dana_570x280.jpg\" alt=\"Dana Reeve\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"an-immeasurable-impact\" class=\"push-top-double\">An Immeasurable Impact<\/h3>\n<p>As a founding board member of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, Dana Reeve succeeded her late husband, Christopher Reeve, as Chair of the Board of Directors in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Dana established the Reeve Foundation&#8217;s quality of life initiatives: the Paralysis Resource Center and the Quality of Life Grants program.<\/p>\n<p>When Christopher was injured, Dana felt lost in a sea of information as she started to navigate their changing life. While her husband fought for a cure, Dana wanted to build a framework of support for individuals, families, and caregivers impacted by paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>The Paralysis Resource Center is a free, comprehensive, national source of informational support for people living with paralysis and their caregivers. Since its inception, the PRC has helped tens of thousands of people living with paralysis access critical resources and information to elevate their quality of life. It is Dana\u2019s legacy, a place to reach out for help, guidance, and support.<\/p>\n<p>As a pillar of the PRC, the Quality of Life Grants program awards financial support to nonprofit organizations that mirror the Reeve Foundation\u2019s mission. The grants focus on programs or projects that foster community engagement and involvement, while promoting health and wellness for individuals living with paralysis. Over 4,000 grants have been awarded to date, totaling more than $48 million to support the disability community.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her work with the Reeve Foundation, Dana also served on the boards of The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, TechHealth, and The Reeve-Irvine Center for Spinal Cord Research and as an advisory board member to the National Family Caregivers Association.<\/p>\n<p>She received numerous awards for her work, most notably the Shining Example Award from Proctor &amp; Gamble in 1998 and an American Image Award from the AAFA in 2003. In addition, the American Cancer Society named her \u201cMother of the Year\u201d in 2005. Dana authored the book <em>Care Packages<\/em>, which was a collection of letters and notes from friends, fellow community members and admirers to the Reeve family following Christopher\u2019s injury. It was published by Random House in 1999.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- .article --><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<div class=\"o-angle o-angle--top bg--light-grey\">\n    <div class=\"o-clip--white\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"c-image-text section--quote \">\n    <div class=\"o-container \">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/reeve\/assets\/images\/quote-red.png\" alt=\"quote\" class=\"image--quote\">\n                    <h3 class=\"u-section--title u-section--title--h3 u-padding--bottom--25\">There will be many choices before you, some of which you\u2019ll welcome and celebrate, and then there will be some over which you will anguish. Some choices will choose you. How you face these choices, these turns in the road, with what kind of attitude, more than the choices themselves, is what will define the context of your life.<\/h3>\n                <h3 class=\"u-section--title h3-light\">Dana Reeve<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"o-angle o-angle--bottom bg--light-grey\">\n    <div class=\"o-clip--white\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<section class=\" bg--light-grey\">\n    <div class=\"o-container \">\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"acting-career\">Acting Career<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First and foremost an actress, Dana\u2019s many singing and acting credits included appearances on television, where she had starring roles on <em>Law &amp; Order<\/em>, <em>Oz<\/em>, and <em>All My Children<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She performed in plays on Broadway, off-Broadway, and at numerous regional theatres, and performed as a singer on national television and at various New York venues. In 2000 she co-hosted a live daily talk show for women on the Lifetime Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dana graduated cum laude from Middlebury College where she also later received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, and she pursued graduate studies in Acting at the California Institute of the Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dana Reeve passed away of lung cancer at the age of 44 on March 6, 2006.
